Why does this man change his behavior when his wife treats him with indifference?

My friend has been trying and trying to figure out how to make this relationship work, esp. since they have 2 children. He is abusive to the children and to her. Every time she tells him its over because she can't take it anymore, he cries and changes and vows to work on it. But HERE'S THE INTERESTING PART: Recently, I was watching them interact, and I noticed that when she treats him kindly and nicely he treats her like crap, but as soon as she got sick of his behavior and ignored him and spoke to him curtly and with an annoyed tone, he IMMEDIATELY started acting like a puppy, begging for her attention and approval. As long as she treated him with indifference, he continued to be super-nice and sweet to her. Does anyone have an opinion on this without more background to give?Why does this man change his behavior when his wife treats him with indifference?
