If i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?

My dog is 7 years old and i love him more than any of my brothers so i have never considered getting him fixed because it seems cruel, even if it extends their life span. hes a really great dog and just recently my older brother moved back home with his 6 month old Labrador. the problem is that my dog is acting very hostile against her and every time she walks near him, he growls and on one occasion snapped at her. i know its a territorial thing but 3 weeks have gone by and he doesnt seem to be getting anywhere near adjusted to her presence. my vet said the best thing is to get him fixed but i've read that it only changes their sexual behaviour. one thing i'm afraid of is that if i do get him fixed, he would be like a completely different dog and i would lose the one i love so much. i would like to know if anyone has any experiance with getting their dog fixed and how drastic his behavior would changeIf i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?
the dogs behavior will not change any. he will be the same dog, just wont be able to make babies. the vet suggested neutering due to him being protective of his yard, and his humans. he will still be just as protective as he was before. he just doesn't want to be bothered with a pup, and is trying to show her his boundaries. i suggest your brother finds a good home for his dog, or asks a friend to take care of it until he can get back out on his own. the pup will not be treated well by the older dog, can get hurt badly, and probably starved out by the older dog. dogs will hoard food, and take control of the food bowl in this kind of situation. good luck to you. the only thing i can see is your family needs to sit down to try to resolve this issue between the dogs calmly, and fairly. things will not get better over time, or by neutering the older dog. there are not magical cures. i'm sorry i could not be of more help with something that would resolve the problem. If i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?
i hope all works out with the girlfriend taking the pup. i feel it is the best thing to do. take care, barbara

You won't even realize that he has been neutered. They are still the same dogs, they are just not able to reproduce.. They live longer healthier happier lives. If i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?

My dog has settled down a lot since he got fixed,,he's still got the same personality..we got ours fixed because he was jumping our fence and roaming the neighbourhood...I wish you the best of luck...If i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?
In this case I may think twice about neutering (I am an advocate for spaying/neutering animals to prevent over population of unwanted critters),.. but, 7 yrs. old is rather mature to be neutering.

Why have you not considered neutering him before, when he was young????

I think there will be a longer time of adjustment form him and also a longer healing period, because of his age.

It's probably not territorial as much as being cranky with a playful rambunctuous 6 mth. old pup.

I'm interested in what the other answers here will say.If i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?
First off....I love animals. Much more than %26quot;folks.%26quot; That said, I read that you're a male with a male dog. I agree, this is a tenuous situation and a risky decision. But, guess what? I also know that animal shelters and pounds are FULL of SOMEONE'S offspring. It isn't %26quot;territory%26quot; dude, it's MATING. So long as you love a domesticated animal....it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to oversee that life. That's all I've got to say.If i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?
Getting a dog neutered, male or female, does not change their personality. Personality comes from their brain, not their sex organs. It should change the hormonally charged behavior, but you will have the dog you love and know.

Add: I would recommend having pre-anesthetic blood work prior to surgery. It's like pre-op blood work for people, checks for internal problems (diabetes, kidney or liver probs) that might otherwise be overlooked in a routine physical exam. This will help to better assess the risk of anesthetic and is a good idea to have done at his age regardless. If i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?
Before my daughter moved out, we had 2 grown male dogs in the house. As a general rule, they got along well, but every once in a while.............it was horrible - they went for blood! I finally broke down and had both of them fixed. Best move I ever made! It took a little while for the %26quot;testosterone%26quot; to completely get out of their system, but they both really calmed down. They both gained a little weight and looked healthier - even their coats were healthier. Now, as far as the wieght gain, perhaps that is because they didn't run off as often - actually stayed home (we lived in the country on 50 acres, so they used to roam and guard the place - lots of stuff to chase!) I guess my point is - it didn't change anything that didn't need changing - just calmed them down a bit! Don't sweat it honey - he'll just be a little more passive! If i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?
There is barely any change in behaviour. Occasionally, neutering can curb aggression, especially territorial or dog aggression, but it is not a cure-all solution. He will also stop going crazy whenever a ***** in heat is in the neighbourhood. Other than that, you will not notice any difference. Other than a few days of fatigue and dopiness after my girl's operation, I never saw any change at all.If i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?
De-sexing a dog is not cruel, you're placing human emotions onto a different species which is a silly %26amp; dangerous thing to do and not in the dogs best interest at all.

It is cruel not to de-sex a dog if it's not being used as part of a breeding program, a male dog especially has all these hormones going through its' body and can't release them like us humans can by way of sex or self-satisifaction.

If you get your dog fixed it will help with the longevity as Male dogs are prone to prostate Cancer.

Your dogs hormones will become more balanced which is likely to lessen the aggression it shows towards other un-sexed male dogs.

However, you will probably also find that your Leadership needs some assistance so these 2 dogs can interact peacefully.

It is entirely normal for an adult dog to repremand a younger dog to show it where it stands in the pack, 3 weeks is nothing, this can go on for 3 months or maybe more until the older dog is sure the puppy knows its' place and humans shouldn't get involved in this unless it esculates to a full on fight.

He won't be a different dog if you get him de-sexed, apart from the fact he will suffer less aniexty and be more balanced.....get over your self and your own ego, this is a dog not a human. If i get my dog fixed how drastic is the change in behavior?
