What causes a sudden change in behavior?

Yesterday my dog began jumping on beds, on the couch, and into the bathtub (empty). He is a 12 year old golden retriever. Nothing has changed lately. Ive checked his heart rate and breathing rate as well as reflexes, sight, and hearing. Also I have searched for any swelling, sore spots, flinching, anything! Everything appears normal.

We will be taking him to the vet later tomorrow but I was interested to see if the yahoo community could come up with any ideas.

What is causing this behavior, and how can we help him stop? What causes a sudden change in behavior?
Is he neutered?

EDIT: Is it possible that there are any? Do you change his food? What causes a sudden change in behavior?
Poor dog.

What causes a sudden change in behavior?
An innate canine impulse, jumping up serves two purposes for dogs: it's a way to show excitement, and it allows for an up close and personal sniff of scent glands in the human face. Combine the two--your pup's excited you're home from work and craves a whiff of your natural aroma--and the result is one jumpy dog.
