This is normal behaviour and with time they will get used to picking them up. They don't like bring handled much and will force air through its nostrils to make a whistle-like sound. Handle them as little as possible as it stressed them out. Hold them from the behind as not to get bitten. Enjoy. What do i do if i pick up my turtle and it trys to bite me? how can i change its behavior?
a turtle has a reptilian brain, it acts on instinct, not reason. you cannot change this behavior. wear gloves. What do i do if i pick up my turtle and it trys to bite me? how can i change its behavior?
Mine ALWAYS tried to bite me. He never can though, if you pick him up where he can't reach your fingers. There is no way that I ever found to modify his behavior, just had to put up with it. One thing you should do though, is to make them feel safe on the basking rock. Never pick them up from the basking rock, always get them after they go in the water. They need a place to bask, and if they don't feel safe there, it is no good for them. What do i do if i pick up my turtle and it trys to bite me? how can i change its behavior?
It may be the position you are picking it up. Turtles/tortoises don't like to be vertical, try keeping it horizontal, try when your picking it up to distract it with a special food treat the smell might distract him/her until the become more familiar with handling. What do i do if i pick up my turtle and it trys to bite me? how can i change its behavior?
