Philosophers: If you can't change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?

Thanks to all your answers. Have a great day!Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
There are essentially only three ways to change behaviour:

1)...Reward desired behaviour and punish the opposite. This usually works provided that the system is adapted to the learner, and is consistently applied - otherwise there is a risk of the subject becoming emotionally and mentally confused, and the message being lost. For this, you need to change neither attitudes (i.e. emotional predisposition) nor perceptions. Establish the habit - condition the reflexes - and there you are. Like training a dog.

2)...Change the subject's perception of the situation. A new angle on it might have a sudden and profound effect on the way someone behaves.

3)...The %26quot;conversion phenomenon%26quot; - aka brainwashing. This works by changing attitudes, without reference to logic or evidence. Changed perception of the situation accompanies or follows the conversion, and behaviour accordingly alters. William Sargant, in his book %26quot;The Battle for the Mind%26quot;, gives a fascinating and persuasive account of how this works in practice for religious and political purposes. In %26quot;The Taming of the Shrew%26quot; Shakespeare gives a fictional account of exactly the same process.

The above exclude, of course, outright compulsion - e.g. fastening someone in a chain-gang and standing over him with a whip. This works in the short run, but behaviour often reverts to normal as soon as the compulsion is removed.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
change the way people see things and you will change both behavior and attitudes

lets say you have a person that thinks that the answer for everything is rubbing a cats belly, you just tell them or show them that the real answer is something else and explain why make them believe you and Bam they will change the rubbing behavior and their attitudes torwards the cat will never be the samePhilosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
why do you need to change a behavior? is it bad? and if so then you need to explain bad or to what degree it is bad...... isn't that how philosophy goes on? u dig deeper and deeper and ur left with just a vague answer !!! and this is a Vague question too.... idk

and abt rubbing the cat???? do u mean Noddings' ethics of Care?Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
If my behaviour didn't follow a change of attitude it would be because I felt restricted by the people around me and that my new way of thinking and being would not be acceptable to them, and that I may be disliked, rejected, fired or whatever. I'm fighting back though and starting to behave the way I feel... stuff what other people think!Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
Personal Behaviour? I recommend therapy, in particular Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, if you _want_ to change that is!

Behaviour of others- by treating them differently, calmly, with respect, how you would wish to be treated. I really do believe in Karma, it just may take a while.

Stress not ; )

BTW Who says you can't change behaviour by changing attitudes?Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
Sorry I don't class myself as a philosopher but thought that I would throw my thoughts in anyway. Perhaps one has to look towards cognitive behavioural therapy - the idea that our thoughts and feelings cause our behaviour and can be worked upon with the aid of a therapist.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
Behaviour is directly tied to attitude. Imagine the self as the core of an onion. Only the outer layers can be effected, but cause enough effect on those outer layers and it eventually echos into the core.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
By altering beliefs.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
Changing behavior is a choice.

When changing a behavior the person has to rewrite their ethics %26amp; morals. Nothing wrong with that.

Also.........the best way to change a behavior is to replace it with another behavior.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
I like skinner boxes and bells and mazes. Treat people like rats and they will change. :)Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
A person has to want to change their behavior - you can not change it for them.

A person can be open to suggestions and act anyway they want afterwards.

Some people may change their behavior for a while but it normally always reverts back to how they behaved before the change because they are more comfortable with it.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
Attitude Adjustment is the only way. And that requires the desire.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
%26quot;It's the Thinking that Guides%26quot; Always.... %26quot;Peace!%26quot; :)Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
I think awareness changes some behaviours eventually and having a behaviour modelled by others.

I think its always a good idea to treat people how I want to be treated rather than what they put out for.

So whatever they are throwing at you you treat them well.

Also empathy and congruence. Telling your truth leads to empathy.

I was in a shop one holiday time and the salesman was being rude to us - I told him very quietly that we would not stay to be treated so rudely and would go if he continued - he blustered but stopped what he was doing.

Not being abused meant more to us than buying the goods.

I have no doubt it was a learning experience.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
To change behaviour you just DO something differently. Once you start to behave differently, more often than not, your thinking will then change AFTERWARDS. You don't need to think differently before you behave differently, you just DO it. EG if you want to learn to drive a car, no amount of affirmations, or pep talks will replace the act of doing it and learning. You don't need the %26quot;right%26quot; attitude first, you just get on with things anyway, and hope your change of attitude catches up with you further along the way.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
In order to change behaviour, you have to change attitudes. The attitude is normally what aids in the choices people make, thus leading to their behaviour. You have to change the way people see life and what peopl think about it if you want to change the way they are going to act and react to the situations that come their way in life.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
Who says attitudes don't change behavior?Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
Who says you can't change behavior by changing attitudes? You certainly can. It's called the Conditionals of Behavior or something, and it goes like this:

If he does the behavior, then he wanted to do it (true)

If he wants to do it, he does it (false)

If he does not do it, he didn't want to (false)

If he doesn't want to, then he won't do it (TRUE!)

All you have to do is de-motivate the behavior and the behavior stops. Further, people act in order to effect a change in their emotional state, usually to lessen an anxiety caused by their awareness of some condition in their environment, like having left their car headlights on at the airport.

So figure out what itch is being scratched by the behavior you don't want, and then either remove that itch or arrange to have it scratched a different way and the undesired behavior dries up.

This is more a psychology issue than philosophical, btw.Philosophers: If you can%26039;t change behavior by changing attitudes, then how do you change behavior?
A good teacher pulls you from the fire of stupidity. Some people are irreparable. You do the good deed and love them after even if they are assholes.

seek isolation and ponder the question for solutions, then,

select a positive and believable answer from all solutions for yourself and live it...always repeating this process, to accommodate your lifestyle in this world...

your're welcome and a great day to you, too!

I say Ynot?
