How do animals know how to evolve camouflage?

Certain animals have fur, feather, scale, etc patterns that look exactly like their environment. How did their bodies know to mimic their surroundings? I understand that certain evolutions, like fins, are the result of changed behavior, like spending more and more time in the water, and that makes sense. But how can a species evolve simply by being aware of their surroundings? How do animals know how to evolve camouflage?

They don't know. It just happens, and those individuals have less chance of being eaten.

It can't. However, if chance alterations make them better suited to their surroundings, then those individuals are more likely to breed and pass their mutations on to descendants. Speaking from personal experience in this kind of thing, I always lose interest in details of the surroundings when engaged in potential procreation. How do animals know how to evolve camouflage?
there are always individual variations in colouring in any animal species, the ones that are harder to find by predators survive to pass on their coloring to offspring, that is natural selection. How do animals know how to evolve camouflage?
its genetic if you are a yellow animal in a green forest you are gone To be eaten by predator but if you are green well you are going To survey and pass that color to your children's it not that they are a were of their sounding its only because the were that particular color that their survive that haw mutations make some species disappear of the earth or live longerHow do animals know how to evolve camouflage?
why does my skin become darker when I expose it to the sun?-why do I get goosebumbs when I get cold?-hmmm-how cool is that?!!!!

I don't tell my body how to do that-the relationship between myself and the rest of this universe is complex-i'm just glad i'm here. How do animals know how to evolve camouflage?
no. You are thinking about it incorrectly. There are selective pressures that cause a species to change its marking patterns, but it has nothing to do with the animals awareness.

in any population there are variations of markings. This is simply a matter of genes. in that population the genes that code for animal patterns that help it compete will over time become more prevalent in a population.
